Landscape Construction in Whidbey Island, WA

Landscape construction on Whidbey Island: patios, walkways, steps, and planting beds built on properly excavated, drained, and compacted base.

Landscape Construction · Whidbey Island, WA

The Heavy Work Under the Pretty Part

Landscape construction is where the excavation meets the finish work. We build across Whidbey Island, Island County and north into Skagit County: paver patios and walkways, steps, planting beds, boulder accents, and the grading and drainage that keep all of it from moving. Walls that hold back a slope have their own page: retaining walls and rockeries.

The difference between hardscape that lasts twenty years and hardscape that heaves in three is entirely underneath it. Proper excavation, a compacted base, and somewhere for water to go. We do that part properly, then build on top of it, and we pair it with drainage and grading.

Hardscape Fails From Water, Not Weight

Most patios and steps that heave, tilt, or sink did not fail because the pavers were weak. They failed because water sat under them with nowhere to go, and saturated ground moves when it freezes and when it dries.

We build hardscape on an excavated and compacted base with a drain path under it and the right backfill around it. On island lots with till underneath and water moving sideways, that is not a detail, it is the whole job.

Base Work Is the Whole Job

A paver patio is only as flat as what is under it in five years. Strip the organics, build the base, compact it, and give the water a route out. Skip any of that and it settles, puddles, and heaves.

We already own the equipment that does the heavy part properly, so the excavation and base are not an afterthought subbed out to whoever was available.

How We Work

What Working With Whidbey Dirt Works Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

Walk the Property & Free Estimate

We come out and look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure, and no guessing at a price over the phone.

2

Plan & Schedule

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where the debris goes, and account for drainage, buried utilities, and anything on the property that has to be protected. You know the plan before a machine moves.

3

The Work

Our own crew runs our own machines, and the job is supervised on site. We keep the ground under control, keep you posted, and read what we find as we dig instead of forcing the plan through it.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, deal with the debris the way the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and draining — ready for whatever you are building next.

Call (360) 632-5159

Do you design the landscape or just build it?
We handle the construction and the ground work, and we can work from a designer’s plan or help you shape a straightforward one. See site planning and design-build.
Do you build retaining walls too?
Yes. Rockeries, boulder walls, block walls, and poured concrete walls have their own page on this site, because a wall that holds back a slope is engineered and drained differently from a patio. We often build the wall and the patio on the same job.
Why do my pavers keep settling?
Almost always inadequate base or trapped water. Adding sand on top does not fix it. It has to be excavated and rebuilt properly to stop.
Can you do the drainage at the same time?
Yes, and you should. Doing hardscape and drainage together is cheaper and works better than fixing drainage after the patio is in.
