Driveway & Road Construction in Whidbey Island, WA

Driveway & Road Construction · Whidbey Island, WA

Access That Survives Winter

A driveway is a road, and roads fail from the bottom up. We build and rebuild driveways and private roads across Whidbey Island, Island County and north into Skagit County: excavating to competent subgrade, laying a proper base, crowning it so water runs off, and setting culverts where water needs to cross.

Rural island driveways are long, wet, and often steep, and most failures come from a base that was never built or drainage that was never planned. We fix the cause. Where a drive crosses a ditch or a wet swale, it ties into real drainage, and it starts with clean clearing and grading.

What We Handle

  • New gravel driveways
  • Long private & shared roads
  • Driveway rebuilds and regrading
  • Base rock & surfacing
  • Culverts and ditch crossings
  • Crowning and shedding water
  • Turnarounds and parking pads
  • Washout and pothole repair

Why Island Driveways Turn to Mud

Almost always the same story: gravel was dumped straight onto soft ground with no base and no crown. The rock disappears into the mud, water sits in the ruts, and every winter it gets worse and needs more rock.

The fix is to dig out the soft material, build a base that spreads the load, and shape the surface so water leaves instead of standing. It costs more once and less forever.

Getting the Water Across

Where a driveway crosses a ditch or a natural drainage path, the culvert decides whether the drive survives. Undersized, crushed, or plugged culverts blow out driveways in a single hard rain.

We size and set culverts properly, ditch the shoulders so water has a path, and keep the road crowned. Access is the one thing on a property that everything else depends on.

How We Work

What Working With Whidbey Dirt Works Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

Walk the Property & Free Estimate

We come out and look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure, and no guessing at a price over the phone.

2

Plan & Schedule

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where the debris goes, and account for drainage, buried utilities, and anything on the property that has to be protected. You know the plan before a machine moves.

3

The Work

Our own crew runs our own machines, and Jeff is on-site. We keep the ground under control, keep you posted, and read what we find as we dig instead of forcing the plan through it.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, deal with the debris the way the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and draining — ready for whatever you are building next.

How often should a gravel driveway be regraded?
A properly built one needs occasional grading and topping up rather than annual rescue. If yours needs rock every year, the base or the drainage is the real problem and adding gravel is just paying rent on it.
Can you build a driveway on a steep grade?
Usually. Steep drives need careful attention to surface, drainage, and where the water gets off — otherwise the driveway becomes the creek. We will tell you honestly if a route is a bad idea.
Do you install culverts?
Yes, including sizing them and ditching so the water actually reaches them. Culvert work near ditches or waterways can have permitting considerations, and we will flag that before we dig.
Gravel or paved?
Depends on grade, length, use, and budget. Gravel done right is durable and repairable. We will give you a straight opinion instead of upselling.
