Land clearing starts almost every project we take on across Whidbey Island, Island County and north into Skagit County. Some jobs are lot clearing for a single homesite, and others open up raw acreage ahead of a build. When the timber is worth harvesting first, we handle the logging and timber harvest too. Then our excavators pull the stumps and root balls, and we take blackberry, salal, and brush back to open ground.
Island ground doesn't clear easy. Big Douglas fir and cedar, dense undergrowth that comes back fast in a wet winter, and glacial till and rock waiting under the topsoil. We clear it the way the site needs, deal with the debris the way you want, and follow through with grading and drainage so the finished lot sheds water instead of holding it. A lot scraped flat and left bare will rut, wash, and compact before a foundation ever gets poured. On a slope, it will move. We clear in a way that keeps the site working: pull the underbrush and the junk trees, leave the root mat doing its job where it matters, and shape the ground so runoff has somewhere to go.
Whidbey Dirt Works came up building custom homes on this island before it ran a clearing crew, so we clear with the rest of the build in mind: where the pad goes, where the utilities run, how water moves across the lot in February. That is the difference between a cleared lot and a buildable one.
You have options, and we price them honestly. We can haul the material completely off-site and leave the property clean, stack what is worth keeping, or set aside firewood-grade wood where you want it. What makes sense depends on the property, the access, and what you are doing next.
On tight island lots, access is usually the real constraint: narrow driveways, soft shoulders, and neighbors. We plan the haul route before we start so we are not tearing up your driveway to get the debris out. If the driveway needs help, we do driveway and road work too.
Lot clearing starts with lines on the ground, set with you before any machine moves. We mark the house pad, the driveway route and the utility corridor, then flag the trees you want to keep. Timber worth logging comes out first, and then our excavators lift the stumps inside the lines, root balls and all. The sorting grapple on the excavator keeps logs and brush in separate piles, so each can be hauled or stacked.
Next, we strip the topsoil off the pad and the driveway route and set it aside on site. That leaves the cleared lot ready for site development, which starts with the pad cut and the driveway base. The utility trenches then run along the corridor we already cleared, where the stumps and roots are gone. Since we did the clearing, we already know where the soft ground and the hardpan sit on your lot.
We clear land on Camano Island the same way we clear it on Whidbey, with our excavators and dump trucks. All of Camano is unincorporated Island County, so the county clearing and grading code applies there too. Bluff and waterfront lots get the closest look, because the county rules tighten near the shoreline and on steep slopes. We check the county maps with you, then the ground, since the county has not mapped every wetland and stream.
North into Skagit County, we do land clearing on lots and acreage around Anacortes, Mount Vernon, Burlington and La Conner. Skagit County and its towns have their own rules, separate from the Island County code. We check them with you before any work starts, and the property owner applies for any permit the job needs. Our process stays the same: we look at the ground with you and put the price in writing.
