Land Clearing
Full lot and acreage clearing: trees, brush, blackberry, stumps, and fence lines taken back to clean, buildable ground.
The trees you pick, whole house sites, crowded stands and blown-down trees, logged across Whidbey Island and Camano Island.
Logging on Whidbey Island and Camano Island is part of the site work our crew does on private land. Selective logging takes out the trees you pick and leaves a healthy stand of keeper trees behind. We also log a lot or house site ahead of a build, and we thin stands that have grown crowded. After a windstorm, we salvage blown-down and dangerous trees, and the sorting grapple lifts out what has fallen.
This page covers the timber itself, up to the logs stacked at a landing and the limbs piled or hauled. Our other pages cover clearing the stumps and brush once the logs are out and the ground work that follows. That includes the blackberry and brush under the trees, plus grading the logged ground into a house site. Because we do all of it, the same island-based company stays on the job after the last log leaves.

We walk the stand with you, out to the property lines, and mark which trees stay and which go. Then we pick a landing, the open spot where logs get stacked for a log truck to load. We plan the routes the logs travel to it, so the ground and the trees you keep stay protected. We drop each tree away from the house, the keeper trees and any lines that cross the property.
Our excavators run tilt rotators, and the sorting grapple sorts the logs and stacks them at the landing. The tilt rotator turns and tilts the grapple, so logs come out from between the trees you keep. Firewood rounds go where you want them, and limbs and tops get piled or hauled off in our dump trucks. We leave the ground ready for what comes next: replanting or site development after the harvest.
Most timber harvest needs a Forest Practices Application/Notification (FPA/N) from the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Salvaging logs, stumps or snags needs one too, and so does building a forest road. The exception is cutting less than 5,000 board feet in 12 months for personal use, about one log truck load. The landowner applies, and the form needs original signatures from the landowner, the timber owner and whoever does the logging.
Logging a house site or pasture converts the land to another use, a Class IV-General forest practice. Island County leaves conversions to the state, so the application goes to DNR with a SEPA environmental checklist. If you mark no conversion, then convert within six years, the county may deny development permits for six years. We go over the maps with you first, then work to the conditions written on the approval.
Under the topsoil, much of Whidbey Island is dense glacial till mixed with rock, which locals call hardpan. Water perches on it through the wet months, November through March, and soft ground ruts under heavy machines. That is why the season matters, and why we keep the machines on the routes planned at the start. Once the trees are down, we can put in drainage for the wet spots the trees were hiding.
If the land stays in timber, a clearcut must be restocked within 3 years of finishing the harvest, or on the schedule DNR sets for a natural regeneration plan. A partial cut taking 50 percent or more of the timber volume within 5 years can need restocking too. Salvaging individual blown-down or dead trees needs no restocking, and neither does thinning for long-term timber growth. If a house is going in, we can also build an access road into the back of the property.

We come out and look at the actual ground: the growth, the slope, the wet spots and the access. We listen to what you want done and give you a clear, written estimate. No pressure, and no guessing at a price over the phone.
We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where the debris goes, and account for drainage, buried utilities, and anything on the property that has to be protected. You know the plan before a machine moves.
Our own crew runs our own machines, and the job is supervised on site. We keep the ground under control, keep you posted, and read what we find as we dig instead of forcing the plan through it.
We walk the finished property with you, deal with the debris the way the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and draining, ready for whatever you are building next.

Full lot and acreage clearing: trees, brush, blackberry, stumps, and fence lines taken back to clean, buildable ground.
Blackberry thickets, Scotch broom and salal pulled out with the root crowns by our excavator and grapple. Debris loads into our dump trucks and leaves the property.
Cut, fill, shape, and finish grade: building pads, yards, and lots left level, compacted, and draining away from what matters.
Complete site development: excavation, foundation digs, utilities, access, and prep, handled start to finish by our crew.
New gravel driveways, long private roads, turnarounds, culverts, and rebuilds of drives that wash out or turn to mud.
French drains, footing drains, infiltration systems, culverts, and swales, engineered to move water off your property and away from your foundation.
Three decades clearing, grading, and digging on Whidbey. Under the topsoil here sit glacial till, hardpan, rock and water that stays where it should not, and our work leaves ground that drains and builds right.
A registered Washington general contractor, bonded and fully insured on every job: a real, accountable company, not a rented machine and a handshake. Your property and your liability are covered.
We look at the ground with you and put a plain-English price in writing, with the whole job in it. We tell you what the job really takes, then we show up and do it.
We live and work here. No ferry delays, no out-of-town crews, no subbing the job out and hoping. One company handles the job from the first call to the final grade, and our own machines and operators do the work.
