Water Goes Where We Tell It

If water is standing in your yard, running under your house, or cutting a channel down your driveway, it is a drainage problem and it will not fix itself. We design and install drainage across Whidbey Island, Island County and north into Skagit County: French drains, footing and curtain drains, infiltration systems, catch basins, culverts, and the regrading that makes any of it work.

Drainage on Whidbey Island is its own animal. Dense glacial till under the topsoil means water often cannot soak in — it perches and travels sideways until it finds a foundation. Fixing that takes someone who knows the ground, not someone who buries pipe and hopes. Most drainage jobs start with honest grading.

Why Drainage Fails Here

People assume rain soaks in. On a lot of this island it does not. Under the topsoil sits dense, compacted glacial till that water moves through very slowly. So the water perches on top of it, runs downhill underground, and comes out wherever it can — the low corner of the lot, the crawlspace, the base of the driveway.

That means a drainage fix has to intercept water where it is actually moving, not just where it is pooling. We find the path first. Burying a pipe in the wrong place is an expensive way to change nothing.

Protecting the Foundation

Standing water against a foundation is the most expensive problem on this list. It saturates the soil, loads the wall, gets into the crawlspace, and quietly ruins framing and air quality. It also compounds — the wetter the ground stays, the worse it drains.

Because Jeff builds houses, he knows what footing drains are supposed to do and what happens when they were never installed or got crushed during backfill. We fix the cause, not the symptom, and we grade the surface so it stops feeding the problem.

How We Work

What Working With Whidbey Dirt Works Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

Walk the Property & Free Estimate

We come out and look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure, and no guessing at a price over the phone.

2

Plan & Schedule

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where the debris goes, and account for drainage, buried utilities, and anything on the property that has to be protected. You know the plan before a machine moves.

3

The Work

Our own crew runs our own machines, and Jeff is on-site. We keep the ground under control, keep you posted, and read what we find as we dig instead of forcing the plan through it.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, deal with the debris the way the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and draining — ready for whatever you are building next.

Why does my yard hold water even on a slope?
Usually because the water is not soaking in. Dense glacial till under the topsoil sheds water sideways rather than down, so it surfaces at the low point regardless of the slope above it. The fix is intercepting it, not just regrading the top.
Will a French drain solve my wet crawlspace?
Sometimes. It depends where the water is coming from and whether the footing drains exist and still work. We look before we quote. Installing the wrong system in the wrong place is a common and expensive mistake here.
Do you fix driveway washouts and roadside ditches?
Yes — culverts, ditching, and regrading, plus the driveway repair itself if it needs it. See driveway and road construction.
Can drainage be done in winter?
Often yes, and winter is when the problem is actually visible. Seeing where the water really goes during a wet stretch is genuinely useful. Access and mud are the limiting factors, not the calendar.
