What areas do you serve?
We work all over Whidbey Island — Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Freeland, Langley, Clinton, and Greenbank — plus Camano Island, and north into Skagit County to Anacortes, Mount Vernon, Burlington, La Conner, and Stanwood. If your property is nearby and we can get equipment to it, call and ask.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Whidbey Dirt Works is a registered Washington general contractor, bonded and fully insured on every job. That protects you and your property, and it means you are hiring an established company rather than someone with a rented machine and no coverage if something goes wrong.
How much does land clearing cost?
Every estimate is free, and we price it after we look at the actual ground. Cost depends on how much you are clearing, how big and how thick the trees and brush are, the slope, how wet the ground is, what happens to the debris, and how easily we can get equipment onto the property. You get a straight written number, not a vague per-acre guess over the phone.
What makes clearing and digging on Whidbey Island different?
What is under the topsoil. Much of the island sits on glacial till — dense, compacted ground that many people call hardpan, mixed with rock and outwash. Water does not drain through it the way people expect, so it perches and finds the low spot, which is often somebody’s crawlspace. Thirty years of digging here means we know what we are likely to hit before the bucket goes in.
Do I need a permit to clear land?
Sometimes. Requirements vary depending on whether you are inside a city like Oak Harbor, Coupeville, or Langley or out in unincorporated Island County, and things like wetlands, steep slopes, shoreline, and how much ground you are disturbing can all change the answer. We will tell you up front what your property likely needs, and we will not knock something down that gets you in trouble.
Do you haul the debris off, or leave it?
Your call, and we price both. We can haul the material completely off-site and leave the property clean, stack or chip it, or leave usable wood where you want it. We will tell you what makes sense for your site and what each option costs.
Are you actually on the island, or coming over on the ferry?
We are island-based and owner-operated. No ferry delays, no out-of-town crew that shows up late and leaves early. Jeff runs the jobs himself, from the first call to the final grade.
How fast can you get started, and do you do storm work?
We run our own equipment and operators, so we can usually get on the schedule quickly. For storm cleanup — downed trees, blocked driveways, washouts — we answer around the clock and get your property safe and passable first.
