Grading & Dirt Work in Whidbey Island, WA

Grading & Dirt Work · Whidbey Island, WA

Ground That Drains the Right Direction

Dirt work is the part nobody sees and everybody pays for when it is done wrong. We grade building pads, driveways, yards, and whole lots across Whidbey Island, Island County and north into Skagit County — cutting, filling, shaping, and compacting so the ground is level where it needs to be level and sloped where it needs to shed water.

Grade is drainage. Get it wrong by an inch over the wrong twenty feet and you have water against a foundation for the next thirty winters. We shoot the grade, move the dirt, and confirm the water goes where we said it would. It pairs naturally with land clearing and drainage work.

Grading Over Glacial Till

Much of this island sits on dense glacial till — the compacted ground people around here call hardpan — often with rock and outwash mixed through it. Water does not soak through it the way people expect. It perches, runs sideways, and finds the lowest thing it can get into, which is frequently somebody's crawlspace.

That changes how you grade. You cannot just assume a lawn will absorb the runoff. We shape positive drainage away from structures, cut swales where the water actually wants to go, and tie into a real drainage system when the ground will not take it.

Pads That Hold Up

A building pad is only as good as the compaction under it. We strip the organics, bring the subgrade up in lifts with material that will actually compact, and compact each lift rather than dumping fill and hoping. Settlement shows up years later as cracks, and it is not cheap to fix.

Because Jeff builds houses, he grades like someone who will have to pour a foundation on it. We hand the site over with the pad at the right elevation and the water headed away from it.

How We Work

What Working With Whidbey Dirt Works Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

Walk the Property & Free Estimate

We come out and look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure, and no guessing at a price over the phone.

2

Plan & Schedule

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where the debris goes, and account for drainage, buried utilities, and anything on the property that has to be protected. You know the plan before a machine moves.

3

The Work

Our own crew runs our own machines, and Jeff is on-site. We keep the ground under control, keep you posted, and read what we find as we dig instead of forcing the plan through it.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, deal with the debris the way the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and draining — ready for whatever you are building next.

What is the difference between rough grading and finish grading?
Rough grading gets the site to approximate shape and elevation — the heavy dirt moving. Finish grading is the last pass that sets the exact elevations and slopes, so pads are flat and everything else drains. Most jobs need both.
Can you fix a yard that holds water?
Usually yes. Sometimes it is purely a grading problem and reshaping the ground solves it. Sometimes the ground underneath will not accept water and you need drainage installed. We will walk it, tell you which one you have, and price it honestly.
Do you bring in fill dirt?
Yes. We can import fill or haul off excess, and we will tell you when a site can be balanced instead — moving dirt within your own property is almost always cheaper than trucking it.
How long does grading take?
It depends on the size, the access, and what is under the surface. We give you a realistic window when we walk the property, and if we hit rock or water we tell you right away rather than quietly running up the bill.
